MESSAGE from L-OADN PRESIDENT, Patricia Egers

Happy Holidays !

It has been  quite a fall semester.  Charity - Delgado was greatly affected by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita as have all of the schools in a wide region.  More than 30 faculty and staff lost everything in the flooding.  I live in New Orleans and see the devastation but I still don't comprehend the magnitude of the disaster.

Many thanks to those schools who offered help:  Nicholls, LSUE, and LA TECH.  We are back in or nursing building and our fourth semester students will complete the program on January 23, 2006.  It has been difficult but I am so proud of the care that they are providing to a needy, hurting community.

Because of the multitude after effects of the hurricanes, Charity is unable to host the Spring L-OADN convention.  Bonnie Johnson and her LSUE colleagues will host it on March 24th.  Many thanks to them.

L-OADN Board Announces Convention 2005

"Reaching for the Stars:  Preparing our Next Generation" has been selected as the theme for the Louisiana Association for Associate Degree Nursing annual convention, to be held April 1, 2005 at the C. B. Pennington Jr. Conference Center in Baton Rouge.  Host school for this year's convention is Our Lady of the Lake College.  The Board desires to obtain an internationally known speaker to keynote this convention's opening.

A framework for exciting new changes for the forthcoming convention was also adopted.  Included in these discussions were a membership campaign,  a re-structuring of the Awards, and the continuation of student poster presentations.

MEMBERSHIP CAMPAIGN:  upon the recommendation of the L-OADN Membership Committee the Board approved awarding three free registrations to the school having the greatest percentage increase in N-OADN membership.  Details of this campaign will be developed by the L-OADN Membership Committee.

AWARDS:  The existing criteria for the Outstanding Alumnus and Outstanding Student Awards were reviewed.  The graduate award was brought into line with the N-OADN Nurse Educator Award, and the title of the L-OADN award changed to reflect this.  Henceforth this award will be known as the L-OADN Outstanding Educator Award.  It is anticipated that the L-OADN recipient's name will subsequently be submitted into the N-OADN Educator of the Year  competition.   Additional, updated information will be sent to each school in time to permit each school an opportunity to participate in these prestigious awards.

STUDENT POSTER PRESENTATIONS:  Convention 2004 was the debut for this activity.  As an evolving endeavor the Board addressed the success of this initial activity, and ways to increase student involvement during the convention itself.   Watch for further information on this exciting activity.

Louisiana Tech Hosts L-OADN 2004 :  Embracing the  Future of Nursing

Convention 2004 hosted by Louisiana Tech University truly embraced a positive image for the future of Louisiana nursing.  Well attended by registered nurses and students alike, convention attendees profited from learning new twists to old methods, and were enlightened with contemporary high tech approaches to teaching/learning and state of the art art practices in patient care.

Keynote speaker was Sharon Tanner MSN, RN, President-Elect of the National Organization for Associate Degree Nursing. Presenting "You are Nursing's Future...Keeping the Cup 1/2 Full", Ms Tanner's comments stimulated thought for RN and Student attendees alike.
